Nose infection causes
There are few causes of nose infections such as:
Most of them are dust, outdoor air pollution, and strong odors like perfume may enhance coughing, irritate the nose, and cause inflammation inside or around the nose thus increasing the risk of nose infection.
Excessive smoking of tobacco
If you have a habit of smoking cigarette and cigar then you are more susceptible to contract nose infection and more so sinus infections. “People who smoke may be at higher risk [of sinus infections] because their natural sinus-cleaning system is damaged by cigarette smoke,” says Dr. Hueston.
Overuse of nasal products
If you are prolonged use of nasal spray over a longer period of time then you are prone to nose infection since you can become less sensitive to their effects so that your nose becomes swollen again which in turn incubate bacteria that make it even worse.
They can result in fungal sinus infections especially to those people with weak immune systems. This is because fungi thrive well in damp and dark environments resulting to various infections. The most common fungus associated with sinusitis is Aspergillus.
There are several viral flu or cold that can make nasal tissue swell, blocking the holes that normally drain sinuses. Get a flu shot, wash your hands, and don’t chill with the visibly ill.
This a chronic medical condition that brings disorder that weakens your immune system, can lead to inflammation in the airways and make you prone to developing thick mucus that can incubate bacteria nose infections due to thicker mucus, or an impaired ability to fight germs.
These are usually associated with nose infections. If you’re prone to allergies or hay fever, avoid things that trigger allergic reactions, such as dust mites, pet dander, mold, and cockroaches.
Nose skin infection
This infection makes the skin of the nose to begin appearing with a small area of tenderness, swelling, and redness. Sometimes it begins with an open sore. If the infection continues to spread, you may develop a fever.
The skin becomes inflamed due to redness, warmth, swelling, and pain. Any skin sore or ulcer that has these signs may be developing cellulitis.
Other skin nose infections are impetigo, a painful rash that is contagious, boils, and in babies and young children, staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome, which causes a rash, blisters, and fever.
Nose infection symptoms
These infections are caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi. They bring out various symptoms once they manifest themselves inside the nose depending on various condition.
The most common form of nose infection is sinus infection which is characterized by the following symptoms:
- A headache due to totally blocked sinuses
- Facial tenderness or swelling when touched
- Pain due to inflammation of sinuses.
- Nasal drainage either clear or whitish-colored
- Bad breath usually is due to bacterial infections
- A sore throat is inflammation of throat tissue by post nasal drip.
- Congestion feeling of nasal stuffiness.
Other symptoms caused by bacteria infections are:
- Crusts around the nostrils
- Boils inside the nostrils
- Nose bleeding
- Painful pimples at the base of the nose hairs.
Chronic nose infection
This is a common condition that affects the cavities around nasal passages making it become inflamed and swollen for like three months despite undergoing treatment.
The condition also interferes with nose drainage leading to a buildup of thick mucus that can be impaired breathing due to blockage pressure.
This condition mostly affects young and middle-aged adults, but it also can affect children resulting to facial pain or tenderness due to swelling.
These acute infection of the nose has the following symptoms:
- A runny nose
- A reduced sense of smell.
- Pain over the affected sinus
Nose infection piercing
Infected nose piercing is caused by:
Unsterilized piercing equipment
Sometimes due to excitement to have your nose pierced, you might forget to sterilize the equipment or tool that is meant for the function. This may result in nose infection since unsterilized tools contain bacteria or microorganisms.
This is a situation or a condition where after piercing your nose, you keep on touching the area with dirt that can clog on the healing scar thereby incubating bacterial growth which in turn leads to nose infection.
Swimming in contaminated pool
Public contaminated pools or hot tubs are home for different bacteria, fungi and other pathogenic micro-organisms that can cause an infection. Avoid swimming in such areas or else cover your face well to keep off from infection.
Using wrong piercing jewelry
This typically due to allergies reaction that may trigger an infection and in return delay healing process. The material used to make the jewelry or the size may cause a reaction with your body. You need to select high-quality jewelry.
Injuries to the piercing
This usually affects sportsmen who happen to have pierced the nose since they might have a trauma caused by injuries thus retarding healing process.
Infection in nose from picking
If you have a habit of compulsive and excessive nose picking, then you would rather stop it. You should beware of the risk of causing very severe illness if the habit is allowed to develop to excess.
It is advisable to use a handkerchief or tissue rather than nose picking since it can cause nose infection. Some of the effects of nose picking include:
- Infections inside and around the nose
- Nose bleeding
- Septal Perforation
- Unhygienic since they contain germs
Staph infection inside nose
They are common, particularly among children, teenagers, and young adults. They can be skin and soft tissue infections, or invasive infections. Although invasive infections are rare they are more serious if they tend to occur.
Some of the minor skin and soft tissue infections are:
- wound infections
Nose infection treatment
Natural or home based remedies:
Apple Cider Vinegar
This is a great natural ingredient with a huge array of health benefits.
Take three tablespoons of raw apple cider then add to a cup of hot water or tea taken three times daily will help thin out excessive mucus relieving congestion and sinus pressure.
It contains natural anti-inflammatory curcumin and also it is an anti-oxidant. When combined with Turmeric root then grind in hot tea, this combination can help loosen mucus from clogged nasal passages, alleviate sinus pressure, and make you feel better all around.
Salt Water Rinse

Thick mucus that blocks drainage cavity can be break by a few drops of Eucalyptus or Peppermint oil in hot water once you inhale the steam.
